A record 6,160 candidates passed the July 28-29, 1998 New York State bar examination. The pass rate of 70.1 percent, however, was far from the record of 78.7 percent in 1994, and was also down slightly from the 1997 mark of 70.8 percent.

There were 8,788 candidates who took the July exam this year. Of the 7,392 people who took the test for the first time, 5,761 (77.9 percent) passed. That figure was also down from 1997's rate of 78.1 percent.

Candidates who passed are listed below under the Appellate Division in which they have applied for admission. The 705 candidates who passed the exam but are not certified for admission, because the Board of Law Examiners has not yet received proof they passed the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination, are listed separately.
