Passing the Bar Exam

Candidates Who Passed
The February 1997 NYS Bar Exam

May 8, 1997
New York Lawyer

RESULTS of the Feb. 25-26, 1997 New York State bar examination show 1,380 candidates having passed, down from last year's total of 1,433. The pass rate of 51.4% of the 2,685 candidates is also down from last year's pass-rate of 55.8%. The total number of applicants exceeded last year's number, 2,569.

The pass rate for first-time applicants, as is typical, was significantly higher, with 66.7%, or 720 of the 1,080 novice candidates, passing. This was down from last year's first time pass-rate of 69.4%.

Candidates who passed and are certified for admission are listed below under the Appellate Division in which they have applied for admission. The 230 candidates who passed the exam but are not certified for admission, because the Board of Law Examiners has not yet received proof they passed the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination, are listed separately.
